Almost every American school children knows the story about Valley Forge. The Valley Forge National Historical Park is the site where General Washington and his struggling army encamped for the 1777-1778 winter. The flame of the American Revolution nearly winked out of existence here, not from war, but from extreme cold, disease, famine, and low morale. If it were not sheer willpower and grim determination of these surviving men, this country might be a very place today. The National Park serves a stark reminder of those times.

Valley Forge isn’t just about the history, though. Today, it’s also a cute little residential town that shares its boundaries with the park itself. The nearby King of Prussia mall is a popular draw for both locals and out-of-towners who seek luxury goods at below-market prices.

The closest large town is Philadelphia, about 25 miles southeast.

Discover Valley Forge

The Great Outdoors

Book an RV in Valley Forge and set out on a world of adventure and fun. The Valley Forge National Historical Park isn’t a wilderness park, by any means, but it does have several miles of biking, hiking, and walking trails. Wild critters make their home in this park, and nature photographers and outdoorsmen may occasionally spot them. A short list includes fox, red-tailed hawk, hickory horned devil, a type of a caterpillar that matures into a stunning butterfly with red wings dappled by bright yellow spots. White-tailed deer also have been sighted on occasion.

For a more rustic, natural scenery, consider Ridley State Creek Park. This modest park has several miles of hiking trails, a portion of which are multi-use. Bike or horseback-ride on those shared trails. Fish from the banks or in the creek waters itself. Ridley Creek is stocked with trout in springs. Kayaking and canoeing in springtime and early summers are doable. Some years, the creek can run shallow in late summers, though. This park has a mix of old- and new-growth forests, and several wild animals roam the woods. Great Blue Heron, a rarity elsewhere in eastern Pennsylvania, are often spotted along the creek.

RV Parks

Due to covenants and policies in several Philadelphia suburban neighborhoods, finding a place to park your Valley Forge motorhome rental can be a challenge. The closest campground, a KOA in West Chester, may be a good option. Abutting a tiny wilderness park, it’s a quiet, family-friendly retreat from the crowds and noise. Space for RVs and motorhomes are plentiful, though the lots can fill up fast in summertime. Reserve well in advance!

Alternatively, the KOA in New Holland might work. It’s roughly at the halfway point between Philadelphia and Harrisburg and is in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country. This is the perfect spot for your Valley Forge camper rental and to enjoy the gentle, idyllic farm country and the slower pace of life.

There are dozens of Walmart stores in the area, which are known to be friendly to the RV community, allowing them to park overnight in their parking lots. The farther out you are from the city, though, better your odds are of getting the store manager to agree.

Exploring the City

Being this close to Philadelphia, there’s plenty of things to do and places to visit in your RV rental. Valley Forge National Historical Park is within walking distance of Valley Forge, which is good. Parking can be competitive, particularly in the summer months. The park guides hold regular tours on foot, bikes, and even trolley, walking the groups through the life and struggles of General Washington’s Continental Army. If automobile tours are preferred or ADA accommodations are needed, special arrangements can be made. The park also has several memorials commemorating the troops’ efforts; the National Memorial Arch, is in particular, poignant and monumental.

Philadelphia (and its suburbs) isn’t all about colonial history. Arnold’s Family Fun Center in Oaks boasts 250,000 square feet of games and fun activities, like the state of art bowling lane center, a thrilling go-kart quarter-mile racecourse, laser tag, mini golf, and a vintage arcade game room featuring the classic games from 80s and 90s in addition to the current games. Blast off!

Of course, no visit to Philadelphia is complete without a stop at one of the local breweries. Craft beer dates back to the founding of this nation, and local enthusiasts and enterprising brewmasters continue the tradition today. McKenzie Brew House which has a couple locations very close by is a good place to start your tour of the local breweries. Billed as a modern reinterpretation of the classic pub, their award-winning craft ales and lagers are always available.

Should it be a quaint historic Pennsylvania city you are seeking to explore, consider a motorhome rental in Valley Forge. Step back in history, tour a brewery, walk a trail, and enjoy the spectacular scenery. Rent an RV in Valley Forge, PA and enjoy this corner of Pennsylvania!
