The town of Helotes, Texas is a fringe suburb of San Antonio, located approximately 14 miles northwest of the downtown area. The small ranching and farming community was formerly inhabited by Apache and Comanche tribespeople for thousands of years before the arrival of settlers from the eastern seaboard. Since the Texas Revolution, Helotes has remained a small town, but it was not until 1981 that the town finally decided to incorporate, in an effort to remain independent of San Antonio. Once a tiny, sleepy place, Helotes has quickly grown into one of the most desirable suburbs to live in around San Antonio, with the population taking off as a result.
Helotes to this day struggles with finding a balance between maintaining its small countryside charm while the city sprawl creeps towards it. That being said, the small suburb has done a fantastic job managing its quick growth and retaining its character, so it’s a great time to book an RV in Helotes. The best time to visit Helotes is probably the first week of May each year when the town celebrates Cornyval, a massive celebration featuring delicious food, parades, live music, rodeos, and other exciting events. It is worth noting that the name Helote comes from Elote, the Spanish word for maize, which always played a large role in the town’s history.
The city of Helotes isn’t exactly known for its parks, but there are still a few hidden gems you can find there when you rent an RV. Helotes City Park is the main park in town, where families convene and children play on the playground. There is even a movie night every few weeks where you can enjoy the big screen cinema from the comfort of your own blanket or lawn chair. The Helotes Fitness Park & Disc Golf Course is a wonderful place where you can keep up with your usual workout routine despite being on vacation. With a bevy of fields and recreational facilities and two awesome disc golf courses, you’ll have plenty to do.
Just outside town is the Government Canyon State Natural Area, which protects over 12,000 acres of rugged canyons and desert ravines, and the countless animal and plant species that live there. This lovely outdoors area is known for its ample hiking and biking trails, as well as its eco-diversity.
Hill Country State Natural Area is another wide-open space designated for protection and recreation by the state government. Camping, hiking, biking, and horseback riding are all popular at Hill Country State Natural Area, and each year the park hosts the Bandera Ultramarathon where runners compete to finish the 100-km course. Additionally, there are several thousand years of native artifacts and archaeological finds within the area.
You could always take your Helotes camper rental to the coast by Corpus Christi, to visit the assortment of seaside preserves and conservation areas. Padre Islands National Seashore is one of the most iconic beaches in the country, untouched by human development. North Padre Island is, in fact, the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world. This majestic coastal park is a fine place to camp overnight in your Helotes rental camper, with many campsites to choose from.
If you are feeling a sense of wanderlust, head over to Guadalupe Mountains National Park or Big Bend National Park, which accurately demonstrate the beauty of western Texas. Big Bend sits on the border of Mexico and the United States and features some of the most spectacular mountain views you could dream of.
For such a small town, Helotes sure has a lot going on, and it only gets better with each passing day. The rapidly developing community is anchored by Old Town Helotes, the lively downtown featuring lots of retail shopping, breweries, eateries, and other exciting places.
John T. Floore Country Store is not what it sounds like. This “country store” is really one of Texas’s best outdoor music venues, featuring big acts like Willie Nelson. This honky-tonk concert space is popular, and brings huge crowds from San Antonio and beyond.
Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, even for those from other faiths, is worthy of a visit purely to take in the wonderful architecture. This masterpiece was carefully built by parishioners in the 19th century, making it a local landmark. The historic Zion Lutheran Church is another fascinating old building worth checking out too if you have the time.
In nearby San Antonio, you can visit Six Flags Fiesta Texas, or SeaWorld San Antonio, to indulge in a day of learning, fast rides, good food, and fun memories. The Alamo is the most iconic of the San Antonio attractions and should be seen if possible, as it is a national landmark. When you rent an RV in Helotes, you have the luxury of accessing all the wonderful food and fun San Antonio has to offer.
Travelers who choose to book a motorhome rental in Helotes rarely find trouble when it comes to finding accommodations during their vacation. Helotes has all you need and more, including RV mechanics, fuel stations, and places to buy supplies for your camping trip.
Admiralty RV Resort is one of the closer parks to the big city, with a heated pool, and personal patios on each site. The park is close to SeaWorld, Six Flags, and many other area attractions.
