Discover Lake Eau Claire RV rentals for memorable road trips

The true origin of Eau Claire in Wisconsin is lost to the ravages of time. Local lore says that 18th-century French explorers and trappers had been navigating upriver on Chippewa River, which was notoriously silty and muddy. After weeks of enduring poor drinking water and filthy clothes, they finally happened upon a new river and shouted, “Voici l’eau claire!” which means “here is the clear water!” And thus, this new river got its name, Eau Claire River. A few decades later, a small settlement formed on the banks of the river, and it also was named Eau Claire. Not long after, a nearby lake unsurprisingly was assigned the same name, and thus, Lake Eau Claire was born.

Getting Outdoors

Lake Eau Claire’s banks are densely lined by tall hardwoods, hiding all signs of civilization. The lake is surrounded by hundreds of acres of dense old-growth woods that somehow escaped the ravages of lumber companies. Now protected by the state of Wisconsin, this region has been left to run wild. As a result, there are very few maintained trails. Abutting this region is Augusta State Wildlife Area, a 2,500-acre park with a few miles of trails. Its main appeal for many is its endless birdwatching opportunities. The open plains teem with songbirds and small game critters like rabbits, grouse, turkey, waterfowl, and foxes. Hunting of these small-game animals is permitted in this park. Nearby Big Falls County Park offers around 150 acres of hiking trails. As the name suggests, a low-but-wide waterfall tumbles over massive granite boulders, remnants of a long-gone ice age. Landscape photography opportunities abound!

Camping at Lake Eau Claire

While northwestern Wisconsin is largely rural, the back roads are narrow and often lack a safe place to pull over an RV rental while you explore the woods. Play it safe and RV camp near Lake Eau Claire. Sandy Hill Campground, nestled on the shores of the lake, is a quiet, family-run facility with around 32 sites. It offers partial hookups and hot showers, and there is a dump station available.

Exploring the Area

On occasion, it’s necessary to get back in touch with civilization. Hop into a rental motorhome and explore dozens of historic towns and landmarks dotting the rolling, flat landscape. Just north of Augusta, is the Dells Mills and Museum, a facility that was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Embark on a winery tour of northwestern Wisconsin. Journeying to each winery is made painless with an RV rental. Bemis Bluff Winery is an award-winning producer, offering up a range of wines with their special spin. The winery’s tasting room is open on weekends, and tours are available. Walk on the wild side at the Irving Park Zoo in Chippewa Falls. The small-but-mighty zoo is home to hundreds of wild animals, including black bears, hyenas, bison, and tigers. Kids and adults alike are invited to interact with some critters at the petting zoo, too.

The van was awesome and Amanda was easy to work with. From the initial videos to advice while on the road, every part of this experience was excellent. The van was well-appointed, functional, and comfortable. I'm 6'1" and I was able to sleep comfortably next to my fiancée. This comfort was especially important when hiding from the rain or midday sun. This was our first time operating a vehicle like this and Amanda gave us all the information we needed to feel confident. Highly recommended.

Shannara and Jeremy were amazing hosts! It was our first time renting and our daughter's first time camping. The RV was fantastic and completely met our needs! They were both extremely accommodating and we would definitely recommend Betsy (the RV)!
