Cheswold sits just north of Delaware’s capital of Dover and was once an important stopping point on the Delaware Railroad that connected the central portion of the state to the Philadelphia area. Throughout its history, the town has had a diverse set of residents who worked in the grain and fruit processing facilities on the edge of Dover. Today, it’s a fairly quiet place that doesn’t have too many attractions of its own; however, its proximity to all that the capital has to offer makes choosing one of the RV rentals in Cheswold an excellent idea

The Route 1 toll road runs adjacent to Cheswold, but has no interchange there, which can make getting around the state a little more difficult, but also should result in a quieter camping experience if you’re staying near to town. If you’d like to get into Dover but would prefer to leave your RV rental in Cheswold, the DART intercity bus system has a stop there, and it’s possible to access local bus routes from its stop in Dover.

The Great Outdoors

No summer vacation in Delaware would be complete without at least some time spent lounging on a beach. The best stretches of sand are all found in the southern third of the state, but thankfully it doesn’t take much time to cross the whole thing. Broadkill Beach is probably the most popular of them, but consider visiting some of the lesser-known ones like Bethany Beach, which doesn’t have quite so much traffic.

For hiking adventures, look no further than Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge. Known more for its bird watching opportunities, there are some great trails to wander that pass exquisite wetland environments. There’s even a small loop road where you can take a tour of the refuge with your vehicle.

If you’re looking for a good picnic spot, Silver Lake Park in downtown Dover is one of the best. It’s fairly small and only has a couple of trails running through it, but it’s quite peaceful, and the beaches on the lake are a great place to watch the waterfowl take flight. You can also fish the lake with the proper license; it’s known to yield decent bass, catfish, and perch.

RV Parks

There aren't a lot of RV parks in the Dover region, but you'll still be able to find some options for the camper rental near Cheswold. The closest campgrounds are near Killens Pond State Park, south of the capital on Route 13. The sites here have water hookups, a dump station, showers, and a playground for the kids, but for the most part, they’re quite rustic. Most visitors come here for the beautiful setting and outdoor recreation opportunities at the pond and surrounding trails.

Holiday Park Campground is a 30-minute drive away, located in Maryland, and is an option if you’d prefer a more typical RV camping experience. Holiday Park sites have full hookups, and on-site amenities include a large swimming pool, laundry facilities, hot showers, along with shuffleboard, and tennis and basketball courts. There are even hayrides for the kids during certain times of the year.

However, if beach days are sure to be part of your visit with the motorhome rental in Cheswold, then you might prefer Deep Branch Family Campground near the town of Milton. It’s just outside the Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, and quite close to Broadkill and Prime Hook Beaches. Sites have full hookups, and there are laundry facilities and a game room to stay entertained if your beach day gets rained out.

Exploring the City

Nearly all of the attractions in the Cheswold area are going to be located just south of town in Dover. One of the most popular attractions, particularly with motorsports fans, is Dover International Speedway. The track is nicknamed “Monster Mile” thanks to its mile-long oval design that is known for fast-paced and exciting races. There are only a couple of NASCAR events each year, but you can find junior league races along with kart events throughout the summer months.

If you’re getting a travel trailer rental in Cheswold toward the end of June, you can attend the Firefly Music Festival, one of the biggest festivals of its kind in the Northeast. It’s held at Dover Speedway and features hundreds of performances from some of the most popular musical acts in the country. Camping is available at the festival, but be aware that many camp outside the grounds, which can make finding a site at that time of year quite difficult.

History buffs and those who enjoy seeing the inner workings of the military will love taking a trip to the Air Mobility Command Museum, which is also in Dover. The museum has an excellent collection of planes, all of which are in near perfect condition, including the massive C-47 Skytrain cargo plane.

If you’re feeling lucky when you rent an RV in Cheswold, head to the casino just south of town. The sprawling entertainment venue has over 2,000 slot machines, numerous card tables, and horse race betting available. There’s also a well-priced restaurant attached where you can get a delicious seafood dinner.
