Deep in the heart of Kent County lies the Killens Pond State Park, a wonderful paradise for motorhome camping in central Delaware. While Delaware is small, the state’s parks are at par with those in the biggest of states if not better. Thanks to its convenient location, Killens Pond State Park is the perfect spot to set up a base camp for your travel trailer. Situated just an hour away from Wilmington, the park is closely bordered by the massive Bombay Hook Natural Wildlife Reserve in Smyrna and the Redden State Forest in Redden. Don’t wait any longer, search for an RV in Kent County and see how much fun you’ll have camping with an RV at Killens Pond State Park.

The park’s highlight is the 66-acre millpond that serves as a fantastic boating and fishing spot. Open year-round; the park is a hotbed of activities, some of which will blow your mind. Apart from hosting an impressive hiking trail system and a disc golf course, a well-equipped waterpark sits smack in the middle of the park. That’s not all as you’ll find a state-of-the-art nature center. With all this and many more on offer, there is no need to look for any more spots to camp in an RV near Felton. Just get yourself one of the finest Felton campers and make some memories.

Getting Outdoors

When it comes to fishing, you’ll not be disappointed at the wide variety of fish in Killens Pond and Murderkill River. Some of the fish to look out for include crappie, largemouth bass, and pickerel. If on-shore fishing isn’t your thing, rent a canoe at the boathouse and try your luck on deeper water. Keep in mind that you’ll need to have a fishing license.

The Killens pond waterpark is a major hit, especially during the warmer months. The waterpark features two-speed slides starting at more than 50 feet high for thrill-seekers and an additional two spiral tunnel slides for less daring swimmers. Toddlers aren’t left behind, as the tot pool and the tot lot come equipped with water jets, bubblers, and a poolside water play system.

The hiking trails here are suitable for adventurers of all skill sets. The 2.5-mile-long Killens Loop Pond Trail which goes around the pond is nice and scenic. It’s possible to extend the length of the trail by about half a mile by adding the various side trails that branch off.

Camping at Killens Pond State Park

After deciding to camp in a rental motorhome at Killens Pond State Park, you’ll be amazed at the pleasantly peaceful and serene setting of the campground. The campground offers a total of 56 campsites which are all back in and heavily shaded. The available hookups for your rental RV are water and electric hookups. However, water hookups aren’t available from early November all through to late March. Water is still available through a frost-free spigot though.

Some of the additional features include a dump station, fire rings, and a camp store. Even though the sites are set a bit close to each other, privacy is still great, and noise is almost non-existent. Dog lovers will be pleased to hear that pets are allowed, but take extra care especially if you’ve got a small dog as the park is home to a couple of owls and eagles.

Even though camping is available throughout the year, only loop C and D remain open all year round. The hosts also supply firewood, and there is surprisingly good mobile network coverage considering the heavily forested area.

Exploring the Area

When your time RV camping at Killens Pond State Park is almost coming to an end, why not use your spare time to visit even more tourist attractions around the park. If you’re a foodie who also loves gaming, couple the two up at the local casino. Imagine having a go at a wide variety of table games as you keep your mouth busy with bacon-wrapped asparagus and a tasty cowboy steak.

Barely a stone’s throw away lies the Center Ice Arena, one of the best family hangout spots in the area. Ice skating might be fun, but you have to try out driving the ice bumper boats. Wind up your tour of Harrington with a brief history session at the Greater Harrington Historical Society.

It would be a shame to pack up your campervan and leave without passing by the first capital city, Dover. At Dover, get up close and personal with retired military planes at the Dover Air Force Base. Follow it up with a tour of Dover’s Old State House where you’ll get to admire the massive painting of George Washington looking over the senate chamber.
