Paulie ("ayyye, Paulie!" in your best Tony Soprano accent) started his life as a sanitation worker in NYC and has since retired to live the good life as a roaming adventurer. He is a diesel 2006 Sprinter van fully converted and 100% instagrammable with vintage oven/stove, full queen size bed, heater, table and benches. All lights and electricity inside run off solar power and there is an outdoor shower hookup! Twinkle lights are remote control operated and battery-operated candles are a whole vibe.

There is plenty of space in the back for gear and lots of storage around the van for your roadtrip and camping essentials. Paulie has handmade walnut counters and tabletops made by woodworker.

Paulie is easy to drive and gives you the chance to break out your favorite cassettes :) It's the perfect van for your next adventure off the grid. He gets an incredible 28 miles per gallon (mpg) and does not require diesel exhaust fuel (DEF). If you've driven a pickup truck or SUV, you will be able to drive Paulie with no problem. He fits in a standard sized parking space, so no need to worry about oversized parking or navigating narrow roads in a small beach town (for example ;) )

What's included

A propane-powered stove allows you to cook anything (non-stinky!) you want if a firepit isn't an option and the fridge/freezer combo keeps food cold as long as the solar power allows (running out of power has never been an issue). There is an outdoor shower (not heated) so you can hose off after a swim or just wash your feet and LOTS of room for toys and gear in the back.

When you pick up Paulie he will have a full tank of gas and (unless you indicate otherwise) will also have fresh linens, pillows, blankets and basic kitchen tools (cutting board, pot, pan, baking sheet, eating utensils, plates, Keurig coffeemaker, a couple of K-pods, coffee cups).

Don't see what you need? I'm happy to look into any custom add-ons that will help you get from pickup to chilling at the campground even quicker.

Recommendations

Lake Michigan Recreation Area is a four-loop campground tucked against the shoreline between Ludington and Manistee. It is not far from either town and their attractions (did someone say "charter fishing trip"??), but it is very private and offers a quieter camping experience than some of the more well-known campgrounds. Nearby this campground is the stunning Nordhouse Dunes and south of Ludington is beautiful Buttersville Park. If you're up for more of a roadtrip, Paulie knows the roads to Platt River Campground at Sleeping Bear National Park VERY well, along with the surrounding areas of Frankfort and Beulah.

Golf is great but you know what it's missing? A good tailgate! That doesn't have to be the case if you use Paulie for your golf tour of Northern Michigan. Some of my favorite area golf courses are Lincoln Hills Golf Club, Hemlock Golf Club, Golden Sands (Mears) Crystal Mountain (Thompsonville) and of course - Arcadia Bluffs in Arcadia, Michigan.

Paulie is the perfect summer camping van, with a built-in ceiling fan and two sliding doors to get plenty of cross-ventilation and make the most of our lakeshore breeze. What are you waiting for?! Time to see if #vanlife lives up to all the hype 😉

Other things to note

A signed Supplemental Rental Agreement will be required upon booking that includes the following:
1. Training: Before the start of your trip, it is required to complete a pre-rental orientation of the RV. This orientation will take about 1 hour, depending on any prior experience you have with a RV. It takes time to do a thorough and complete walkthrough, so please plan accordingly!

2. No Refunds for Early Returns: If you return the RV early we do not refund the unused days/time. This includes if you have been in a motor vehicle accident (MVA) with the RV; however, if the MVA is not your fault you may be able to recover your rental costs from the at-fault driver’s liability insurance.

3. Fee for Late Returns: A fee of $50 per hour will be charged if the RV is returned later than the agreed upon time. If the RV is returned after dark or while owner is not home/unavailable, it will be checked in the next day, during daylight hours, and any applicable damages will be charged against your security deposit. Renter forfeits their right to complete a return walkthrough with owner, if the unit is returned at a time different than indicated in line item #23. All drivers must be at least 25 years old and must be listed on the platform’s rental contract when you pick up the RV. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Example: 1-60 minutes late return $50, 61-120 minutes late return will $100

4. Travel Restrictions: No travel is allowed on any non-paved roadways like logging roads, forest service roads, beaches, etc. Driving on a non-paved road inside a licensed RV park is acceptable. Driving on unapproved roads will result in the forfeiture of your entire deposit.

5. Toll Roads, Red Light Cameras, Parking Tickets: You are responsible to disclose any tolls, red light tickets or parking tickets to owners at the time you return the RV. Toll invoices are a major burden. If we receive any tolls, tickets or fees related to your rental, a $70 administration fee plus the cost of the bill for EACH invoice will be charged to you. Responsibility for any traffic or parking violations will be transferred to you and you will be charged a $70 administration fee. If you want to use toll roads, you are free to pay at the plazas or bring your own toll tags, just make sure no invoices or toll by plate, etc. mail comes our way or the $70 administration fee, plus the bill will be applied. Note: Most toll agencies are good to work with and will help you out if a mistake is made and you call them right away.

6. Campground Reservations: We are not responsible for campground reservations – including cancelations for COVID. All campground reservations must be made separately from your reservation with us, with the campground’s reservation agency. All campground and campsite fees are separate from and in addition to the rental price and fees under this agreement. No refunds will be given for campsite reservation errors.

7. Dogs: Well-behaved and potty trained pups are welcome. We do not charge an extra fee for a dog; however, there is an additional refundable deposit required for dogs, equal to $250.00, per dog. If any pet damages occur, including evidence of pet urine or feces, you will forfeit your entire security deposit, and you agree to pay any excess damage fees. If any large amounts of pet hair are left upon return, you will be charged a full Deep Cleaning Fee for it to be removed.

Paulie quit smoking when he left NYC, please plan on not smoking in the van!

Pilot light and heat must be turned off while driving for safety purposes.

Lastly, be sure to take lots of photos, ignore work emails and let the freedom of #vanlife renew your spirit!

I am not your typical camper- I didn't grow up sleeping outside with my family and most of my camping trips have been solo or with my furry copilot (Nahla, the Maltipoo/mighty hunter). I felt drawn to camping for the adventure it offered, and started tent camping in 2016. I fell in love with the peace I feel when I'm surrounded by trees and the freedom of not being locked into a schedule. From there, I ventured into winter camping and hammock camping.

I had a great weekend with Paulie! He’s not difficult to drive, lots of great amenities (loved the decor and little extras like salt and pepper). The bed is pretty comfortable but wouldn’t hurt to bring an extra pad for the top. The sheets were sooo soft!

Paulie was great! Easy to drive and fuel efficient, in great condition with very low mileage so we had absolutely no worries about any mechanical problems. The bed was comfortable, and with the windows and vents open the temperature was easily managed. The owner was super awesome to work with, and very accommodating to our schedule. She was great at communicating with us too, so we weren't in the dark about what to expect. Highly recommended!!
