Aberdeen Proving Ground (“APG”) is an army base next to Aberdeen, in Maryland. It was established in 1917 shortly after the U.S. had entered World War I. It is a census-designated place and was an alternative to Sandy Hook Proving Ground, which the military decided was too small for the larger weapons testing being conducted. Today it is a major employer in Harford County and an important military installation. The nearby city of Aberdeen started as a farming community in 1720, developing into a village around 1800. Aberdeen was incorporated as a town in 1892 and again as a city in 1992. It is also the home of a long list of professional athletes, a handful of notable politicians, and Frank Zappa, who lived there as a youth while his father worked at APG.
Book an RV in Harford County and you will have the right vehicle for creating a perfect vacation and the memories to go with it. There are a number of towns that should be interesting for visitors. Elkton was once a popular location for eloping couples to marry, earning the name “Gretna Green of the East”. Annapolis served as the capital city of the United States from 1783 to 1784. Bethesda means “house of mercy” in Aramaic (from the words “beth hesda”) and “house of kindness” in Hebrew (from the words “beit chesed”). Gaithersburg is divided into two sections by Interstate 270; the older, original section is east of the interstate and contains many historical buildings, especially in the central business district “Olde Town”. Frederick is the center of a historical crossroads, going east-west from the Chesapeake Bay across the Appalachian Mountains and also north-south. Your APG travel trailer rental is your introduction to the history and culture that makes Maryland a unique place.
Susquehanna State Park is a historical recreational area with opportunities to hike, mountain bike, and fish in the Susquehanna River. Anglers can try catching pike, perch, and bass either from shore or from a boat. The park has a dense forest and rocky landscape, offering spectacular views for hikers and photographers, and a restored Rock Run Historic Area with three epic landmarks. The park is open to camping and picnicking for those seeking a quieter, more relaxed adventure.
Bynum Run Conservation Area is an undeveloped park with a pavilion and picnic areas, a trail for hiking, and access to fishing in a pond or from a pier. Visitors also have the opportunity to kayak and observe the native wildlife. Keep your APG RV trailer rental nearby and you will have somewhere to store your catch of the day until it is time to introduce it to the frying pan.
Stoney Demonstration State Forest is an educational resource for instructing students about forest and wildlife habitat management practices and silviculture. It has rustic but clearly marked trails leading through forest areas that can be used for hiking and biking.
There is a multitude of RV parks and campgrounds near Aberdeen Proving Ground but many will have mobile homes and/or tent camping. Your APG camper rental is well suited to the Maryland outdoor environment, guaranteeing a comfortable and worry-free vacation wherever you decide to stay.
Ramblin' Pines is an RV park with a pet exercise park, games and exercise rooms, and a swimming pool. There are restrooms and hot showers, laundry facilities, and a general store. Sites can be rented for two days, or by the week or month, and include full hookups in most and pull-through access in a few. The campground has plenty of trees and grass, providing shade and scenery, and a swimming pool. There is some tent camping and also a few rental cabins.
Bar Harbor RV Park is located next to the Bush River on a wooded peninsula, with an abundance of trees. The park has a swimming pool and guests can rent paddle boards, paddle boats, or kayaks for cruising the river. Fishing can be enjoyed from a pier overlooking the river and an on-site convenience store sells groceries, propane, and RV supplies. The store also has a gift shop. Individual sites have concrete pads, fire rings, and access to wireless internet.
There is a lot to see and do in the area surrounding APG. One of the local museums is the US Army Ordnance Museum, a top Aberdeen attraction housing a huge collection of old tanks on the outdoor grounds and more memorabilia inside. Baseball aficionados can take in a minor league game; the local team has MLB connections and plays out of the Ripken Stadium, part of a larger complex that hosts concerts, soccer matches, and other events. There are several good golf courses in the area where visitors can squeeze in a few rounds, or you can engage in a number of water-based activities at the nearby Chesapeake Bay. Visitors can go shopping or take a walking tour of the city; better yet, jump into your Aberdeen Proving Ground motorhome rental and take your own self-guided road trip. These are why RV vacations have become legendary and one should never pass up the opportunity.
When dinnertime has arrived, there is a good selection of restaurants in the area around APG. Many of the outlets are locally owned-operated and portions tend to be large. One Chinese restaurant offers both an a-la-carte menu and a lunch buffet; the buffet focuses mostly on the well known and popular dishes but guests seeking something more creative can order by the plate. You can also order takeout here and head back to your APG luxury RV rental for a sumptuous meal enjoyed outdoors and in comfort, another reason why RV vacations are so popular.
