Essex is an unincorporated community in Baltimore County, Maryland, that was started by a real estate company in 1909. The company's purpose was to sell rural land to citizens in Baltimore who wanted to grow gardens or engage in other outdoor activities. Essex's first general store opened in 1910, and the realtors donated land for two churches built in 1911-12 and a fire station built in 1921. The community grew during World War II but diminished after; most of the aerospace industries situated in Essex were bought out and are now owned by Lockheed Martin. The community has one historic property, Ballestone Manor, that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; it was added to the list in 1975.
