Chicago, IL is two hours' drive away while Detroit, on the other side of the peninsula, is three hours' drive. “Brunson Harbor” (after one of its founders) started as a swampland before the completion of the canal in 1862, which drained the marsh and provided berthing area for boats. The town's name was later changed in honor of a Missouri senator who pushed for Michigan's statehood.

The next closest you’ll find are in Berrien Springs, Coloma, and Covert within half an hour’s drive. With the exception of state parks, most of these campgrounds offer full hookup sites, restrooms, and showers. The Van Buren State Park and the Warren Dunes State Park both have electric sites for the camper rental from Benton Harbor, along with restrooms and showers.

Our first camper van adventure and it was an incredible experience! My husband and I rented the van for a trip to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula with our 11-year-old daughter, and it couldn’t have been better. For starters, Lisa and Bill were awesome to work with—flexible, responsive, and just genuinely good people. The van itself was thoughtfully equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable camping adventure. It was spacious, cozy, and felt just like home on wheels. While we didn’t end up using the shower, it was great to have the option, and the composting toilet was a total bonus (and odor free:) I had never driven a vehicle that size before, but it handled beautifully. We’re already dreaming about our next adventure in the van!
