Information About Ypsilanti, MI

The small city of Ypsilanti sits in between Ann Arbor and Detroit, on the Huron River. This unique town was once a fur trading post in the 1800s, and eventually became a permanent settlement with the oncoming waves of settlers moving from the east coast, particularly the Appalachian region. Ypsilanti was originally called Woodruff’s Grove, but was changed to pay respect to Demetrios Ypsilanti, a war hero fighting for independence in Greece.

When you choose to book an RV in Ypsilanti, you are in for quite the surprise. The town is steeped in rich history and is known for its many cultural buildings. Ypsilanti is the second largest contiguous historic area in the entire state after Grand Rapids. Even the main street of town is lined with colorful row houses. Ypsilanti frequently hosts festivals because the citizens of the community sure can find any reason to celebrate and have a good time. With the Ypsilanti Heritage Festival, the Michigan Brewers Guild Summer Beer Festival, Ypsilanti ElvisFest, and many other smaller events, there is seemingly always something going on, and the friendly locals are happy to welcome outsiders. There are too many reasons to name for why you should rent an RV in Ypsilanti, but the lovely little town sure is worthy of your attention.

Experience the Sites and Scenery

While Michigan is absolutely teeming with gorgeous outdoors scenery, Ypsilanti is in a more metro area and thus has fewer opportunities to get outdoors. Fortunately, you can take your Ypsilanti camper rental up to the northern reaches of the lower peninsula and see all the “Great Lakes State” has to offer. That is not to say that there aren’t some great options closer to town that you can stop and enjoy.

Waterloo State Recreation Area, on the other side of Ann Arbor, is a magnificent park dedicated to helping city folk get out and enjoy the beautiful Michigan summers. Waterloo is great in the wintertime, too, with nearly 50 miles of trails that are perfect for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. With 11 lakes, four campgrounds, and the Gerald E. Eddy Discovery Center, where you can see exhibits giving detailed history and information about the local wildlife and indigenous peoples, you will struggle to find a better place to bring your Ypsilanti RV rental. Immediately adjacent to Waterloo is Pinckney State Recreation Area, an 11,000-acre wonderland of lowland swamps, wooded groves, and gentle rolling streams. Here you can do lots of hiking, camping, swimming, hunting, or even utilize the boat ramp and take a nice fishing excursion.

Island Lake State Recreation Area, less than an hour north, is another great option for you and your Ypsilanti motorhome rental. The park is the third busiest in all of Michigan and attracts over one million visitors a year. You can hike or bike or even swim in one of the many waterways, and camping is great here too. Island Lake State Recreation Area even has some campgrounds you can reach by canoe, as well as a hot-air balloon launching spot!

If hunting is what you fancy, Pointe Mouillee State Game Area sits on the shores of Lake Erie just to the south of Detroit and serves as a prime spot to hunt duck and other waterfowl. Since 1947, the marshy lowlands even host the Pointe Mouillee Waterfowl Festival every year. With the countless ponds, forests, and rivers, as well as the famous Great Lakes, Michigan is for sure a nature lovers paradise, which is why you should definitely consider renting an RV in Ypsilanti to take a tour.

City Attractions

Ypsilanti is littered with small treasures and culturally significant attractions. Depot Town, the historic heart of the city, is full of incredible restaurants and shops, and wonderful educational museums are scattered throughout the downtown. The Ypsilanti Automotive Heritage Museum is an interesting exhibition of classic old cars. The museum is housed in an old car dealership and hosts a large car show once a year. Inside a gorgeous, refurbished Victorian house built in 1860, Ypsilanti Historical Museum and Archives holds many artifacts from bygone eras to remind us of the important past and how it shaped the city’s future. Within walking distance, you can also see the Yankee Air Force Museum and the Michigan Firehouse Museum, which work together to create a tradition of honoring the past and fostering an appreciation for history.

The strangest and most popular sight to see in Ypsilanti, however, is the Ypsilanti Water Tower which was built in 1890. The town's most famous landmark is an unusually shaped 147’ tall edifice built in the old Queen Anne architectural style. At the bottom of the tower, you can also see a statue of Demetrios Ypsilanti, the Greek war hero and namesake of the town.

Where to Park It

Ypsilanti has a few fantastic options in the immediate vicinity and surrounding areas for you when you rent an RV and need a place to stay. The closest to the downtown area is the Detroit Greenfield RV Park. This fabulous resort has a gorgeous stretch of beach, a waterslide, mini golf course, a helpful shop, and over 200 campsites perfect for you and your Ypsilanti camper rental. Additionally, the park has basketball and volleyball courts, rental boats, and many other fun amenities to help you have a great time. Wayne County Fairgrounds has places to camp as well and is within walking distance of many fun activities like the Detroit Zoo and the Henry Ford Museum.

Just south of town in Milan, KC Campground is perhaps a tiny bit farther away but definitely a fantastic option. This lovely 20-acre retreat has all the usual amenities and then some, and hosts the amazing Milan Bluegrass Festival each August. There is just so much to do and see when you rent a motorhome in Ypsilanti, so start planning now!
