Discover Lake Waconia RV rentals for memorable road trips
Formerly known as Clearwater Lake, the lake was renamed to Lake Waconia to avoid confusion with another lake with the same name. A few locals stubbornly continue to refer to Lake Waconia as Clearwater Lake, and this often confuses out-of-town visitors. The name, Waconia, was chosen in a nod to the Sioux Native Americans who once lived and hunted in the area. Waconia is a Sioux word that means fountain or spring.
Indeed, Waconia is a spring-fed lake. Nearly perfectly round, with a large island dotting the southern portion of the lake, Lake Waconia was formed by a glacier. The glacier, which is estimated to have been around a mile high, receded north at the end of the last Ice Age, some 10,000 years ago. As it retreated, it simultaneously gouged the soft land out as well as deposited a massive sheet of moraine and boulders.
The closest large town is the town of Waconia, MN, which has a handful of restaurants and shopping to choose from. For more variety in retail shopping and the night scene, Minneapolis, is about 30 miles to the east. To create the perfect RV camping adventure, search for an RV rental in Carver County, MN.

Getting Outdoors
The land around Lake Waconia is barely high enough to keep the water contained within this round bowl. Tall oak, maple, and other deciduous trees line the shores. Close to the banks, they provide a windbreak as well as a shade that fish and other aquatic life enjoy. Out near the center of the lake, however, the water is reported to get choppy in light breezes, which may make for a fun boating trip.Although Lake Waconia is quite close to Minneapolis, it’s usually not as crowded as its other larger, more popular cousin, Lake Minnetonka. That translates to less competition for the good fishing spots. Lake Waconia is known to have especially robust populations of walleye and muskellunge. Largemouth bass and panfish fishing are also quite good. In addition to two fishing piers, three boat ramps invite fishing and other water recreational activities in boats. Water-skiing, sailboarding, and swimming are enjoyed by many. Lake Waconia is also favored by ornithologists and bird enthusiasts because bald eagles, egrets, and blue herons regularly nest along the shores.Though much of the land surrounding Lake Waconia is mostly farmlands, there are pockets of wilderness that hikers and outdoor adventurers can enjoy. Minnesota Valley State Recreational Area has nearly 50 miles of hiking trails, some of which are shared with bicycles and horses. This park is especially well known for its wetlands, which is a popular stopover spot for thousands of migratory birds and waterfowls. There are a handful of ghost towns in this park. Here and there, remains of dwellings stand, slowly crumbling as the years go by.Dakota Rail Trail is also popular with bicyclists and hikers. Stretching 26.5 miles, the trail starts in Wayzata, MN, and meanders through open fields, meadows, wetlands, and through dense woods. It ultimately ends in Mayer, MN.
Camping at Lake Waconia
Though it’s every outdoor lover’s dream to wake up to the serene sound of waves lapping at the shore and birdsong in the trees, there is no RV camping at Lake Waconia. However, there are several options nearby. Just minutes away in Victoria, MN, is Lake Auburn campground. Though the campground is primitive, there are faucets with drinking water available, and each site has a fire ring.Alternatively, the KOA outside Jordan may tick off several boxes. It offers several amenities like a heated pool, playground for children, and free wifi in addition to full hookups. It’s also dog-friendly, and there is a fenced pet park.
Exploring the Area
Many people will eyeball Minneapolis, and why not? It’s a terrific little city with loads of charm, friendly locals, and an active urban scene. There are endless art galleries, museums, theater, restaurants, comedy clubs, and nightclubs. Watch the Minnesota Twins play at the baseball stadium, too. The streets aren’t too challenging to navigate with an RV rental. But there’s plenty of public transport if alternative means of getting around the city is needed.Don’t overlook the small towns dotting the fringes of the famous Twin Cities, though. They boast quaint, old-world vibe, and there’s plenty of places to visit and attractions to explore. Traveling from town to town is a snap in a rental motorhome. Luceline Orchards and Vineyard in Watertown, claims to be the best apple orchard in Minnesota. In addition to picking your own fresh, crisp apples, visitors are welcome to explore the grounds, which includes a petting zoo with sheep, goats, and long-haired cows. Well-behaved dogs are welcomed, too.For thrills a minute, head over to Shakopee, MN. The Valleyfair amusement park features over 50 different rides that are sure to appeal to everyone from thrill-seekers to timid children. The venue also regularly hosts concerts featuring up-and-coming acts and entertainers. At the end of a long day of adventure and sightseeing, kick up your heels outside a rental camper and enjoy a crackling campfire.
Anna and Joey were absolutely the easiest hosts to work with and they went the extra family for our family’s first ever camping trip. Would recommend them 100%
We had a great experience renting this camper! Alexandra was great, and the camper was clean and prepped for us with everything we needed. We removed the dining table and our pack 'n play fit perfectly. :)
