The Great Outdoors

Motorhome rental in Gardners has become increasingly popular amongst hikers due to its close proximity to a huge state park, several lakes and a plethora of scenic walking trails.

When you opt for an RV rental, most of the outdoor activities can be found in the Pine Grove Furnace State Park that spans over 700 acres through the stunning Great Appalachian Valley. Two lakes reside within the park that are perfect for a variety of recreational activities. For those that love to spend time on the water head to Lake Laurel, where it is possible to hire kayaks, canoes, and boats for a relaxing day out on the water. Afterwards, why not unwind on one of many sandy beaches, which conveniently have indoor changing areas and cold-water showers.

The smaller Lake Fuller is also worth a visit, although recreational activities are not allowed here. This lake was once a quarry that belonged to the Pine Grove Iron Works, and now is a piece of history worth admiring. Built during the late 18th century, along with a brick plant and other industrial buildings, these areas are now protected as an area of historical significance.

Travelers flock from all over the country to complete a section of the colossal Appalachian Trail that spans over 2000 miles from Mount Katahdin in Maine to Springer Mountain in Georgia. Pine Grove Furnace State Park sees a small section of the trail run through it, so it is a perfect place to pick up the second half of the walk. For any keen cyclists, the Cumberland County Biker Trail also crosses the Appalachian Trail here. This historical trail follows the old railroad and is a relatively flat 2.5 miles. Winding through the dense Michaux State Forest, there is an abundance of unique flora and fauna to be discovered here. This is a particularly popular route; so do expect to share it with others!

RV Parks

When you book an RV in Adams County, there are a number of local RV parks to choose from. Pine Grove Furnace State Park caters for every kind of camper; whether you have picked up a basic or a luxury RV rental from Gardners. The campground is nestled into the heart of the park, around a 25-minute drive from town. Each spacious site comes equipped with electrical hookups and a picnic area. Although there are no water hookups, the communal amenities are aplenty, clean, and well maintained.

If Pine Furnace campground is full, there are plenty of campgrounds that can be found close to the many entrances of the park. Cherokee Campground, situated next to the east entrance, is a great place for a quiet and relaxing getaway. This park has lots of amenities including pull-through sites, an immaculate swimming pool, playground, game room, and reliable WiFi throughout the grounds. Look out for some of the special events they hold during the national holidays!

Walmore Manor Campground offers a similar affair for your Gardners RV rental. Situated just off Route 15, this campground is an easy fifteen-minute drive away from Gardners and is open all year round. The location is not quite as scenic as other sites you will find in the area, and it is best used as a quick stopover between places.

Exploring the City

The Appalachian Trail Museum is a must see with your camper rental from Gardners. This volunteer-led museum is located smack bang in the middle of the trail itself and celebrates the millions of hikers who have completed or attempted to complete the full 1,367 miles. Stop off here to see thousands of photos of hikers who have passed through or partake in the tradition of eating half a gallon of ice cream in a single sitting. Take time to marvel at the building itself, a historical artifact, that 200 years ago was used as a gristmill.

Why not cruise on up to the Boiling Springs Pool for somewhere to cool down after a long day of hiking. Choose a place to relax on the large expanses of green grass, spotted between four pools and three waterslides. Although there are snack bars on site, members of the public are welcome to bring their own picnic along with them!

If you are looking to visit a historical site during your RV rental vacation in Pennsylvania, Gettysburg is the place to go. Once the site of the bloodiest battle in the American Civil War, this town is now abundant with museums and significant sites educating visitors on the past events. Start your visit at the Museum of Civil War, which gives visitors an introduction into the sequence of events that took place in 1863. Next take a guided tour of the battlefield conducted by bus, bike, horse, or even Segway! These tours usually include a visit to the Gettysburg National Cemetery, the final resting place of thousands of soldiers who died during the battle. This is a fascinating but sobering experience - a must see for anyone in the area.
