Named after the ancestors of Sebastian Spering Kresge (the founder of K-mart), Kresgeville, Pennsylvania is a small community in Monroe County. It sprawls along the U.S. Route 209 between Sciota and Lehighton while being on the doorstep of the Pocono Mountains’ rugged landscapes.

Kresgeville forms part of the Polk Township (named for James K. Polk, the 11th president of the United States), which was initially settled by Europeans of German ancestry in the mid-18th century. Today, it’s proximity to nature reserves and historic towns makes it the perfect place to rent an RV while exploring eastern Pennsylvania.

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your motorhome rental in Kresgeville and head west to the Beltzville State Park, which sprawls across almost 3,000 acres around the Beltzville Dam on Pohopoco Creek. It’s deservedly popular with anglers who hope to lure striped bass, largemouth bass, and walleye, with the Pohopoco Creek regularly stocked with trout by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. There’s a swimming beach with a bathhouse and a handful of picnic pavilions, as well as around 15 miles of hiking trails that pass an old gristmill and an abandoned slate quarry.

Or, head north to the Hickory Run State Park in the Pocono Mountains, which is traversed by around 44 miles of hiking trails and home to white-tailed deer, black bears, and squirrels. Follow the Shades of Death Trail through a dense forest of rhododendrons that bloom during the summer months or admire the beautiful cascade on the Hawk Falls Trail. Aside from hiking and swimming in the Sand Spring Lake during the summer season, the park transforms with cross-country skiing trails and ice skating during the winter months.

Around 30 minutes’ drive east of Kresgeville lies the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, an immense natural area that sprawls across 70,000 acres. It encompasses a 40-mile stretch of the Delaware River and is a hub for outdoor pursuits, including more than 100 miles of hiking trails (including 27 miles of the iconic Appalachian Trail). Discover the park’s history at the Millbrook Village, Foster Armstrong House, and Neldon-Roberts Stonehouse or rent a canoe to explore the waters of the Delaware River at your leisure.

RV Parks

Pick up your travel trailer rental in Kresgeville and pull into one of the RV sites at the StonyBrook RV Resort, a family-friendly campground in Lehighton. Their 50-amp sites can accommodate big rigs, and there’s complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the property, as well as cable TV, picnic tables, and fire rings.

Also nearby is the Don Laine Campground in neighboring Palmerton that features a recreational hall, game room, and children’s playground. There’s a swimming pool where you can cool off during the hot summer months and an on-site laundry facility, as well as around 100 RV sites that nestle in the wooded surrounds.

Farther south is the Allentown KOA, another family-friendly campsite that’s situated in a secluded mountain valley near New Tripoli. There are two playgrounds, a pool, and a game room, as well as a recreational center where movies and bingo nights are regularly held.

Exploring the City

Book an RV rental near Kresgeville and make the short drive east to Stroudsburg to learn about the history of Monroe County. Join a guided tour of the late-18th century Stroud Mansion, which is a fine example of Georgian-style architecture and now managed by the Monroe County Historical Association. They also maintain the one-room Bell School that’s located in Hamilton Township and dates to the 1870s, as well as the Driebe Freight Station - a restored 1882 freight station of the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railroad.

Kresgeville makes a good base for exploring the sights of Allentown, which include a full-size replica of the Liberty Bell that’s located inside the historic Zion’s Reformed United Church of Christ. Head to the Museum of Indian Culture where ancient tools, pottery, and artifacts are on display or browse the modern American works at the Allentown Art Museum. If you’re traveling with kids, they can let off some steam on the rollercoasters and waterslides at the amusement park in the west of the city.

If you’re more interested in the history of the region, continue south to Quakertown to stroll through its historic district, which is packed with Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, and Victorian architecture. See the first permanent residence to be built in the town at the Liberty Hall (where the Liberty Bell was hidden on its way to Allentown) and admire the charming Georgian-style mansion of Enoch Roberts House. Also of note is the Quakertown Passenger and Freight Station that was designed by Wilson Bros. & Company in 1889 using dark Rockhill granite and Indiana limestone.

Kresgeville is home to a small supermarket where you can pick up supplies, and there are a couple of eateries if you want to dine out, as well as a gas station if you need to fill up your Kresgeville camper rental. Or, you can make the 45-minute drive south to Allentown where there’s a more extensive choice of services.

Whether you’re visiting Monroe County for its historic architecture or fishing reserves, book an RV in Kresgeville and embark on your tour of eastern Pennsylvania.
