Discover Lake Nokomis RV rentals for memorable road trips
“Where nature lingered longer” is the motto of Oneida County, which borders Lake Nokomis. Aptly phrased, the sheer wilderness of Wisconsin’s Northwoods is awe-inspiring. Virtually untouched, the lake is a part of a chain of lakes which also includes Lake Bridges and Deer Lake. Between abundant fishing, recreational boating, plentiful wildlife, and easy access to the lush outdoors, it’s easy to see how Oneida earned its motto.
The closest town is Tomahawk, about 10 miles south. Full of small-town charm, Tomahawk boasts historic buildings and many modern amenities often associated with a large town like fast-food restaurants, movie theaters, a hospital, and a museum. For even more retail shopping variety, Rhinelander boasts several options, including a Walmart store. Rhinelander, WI is about 25 miles to the east. Create the perfect RV camping vacation and search for an RV in Oneida County, WI.

Getting Outdoors
Lake Nokomis has a surface area of around 2,300 acres, but with the easy access to the other nearby lakes, it can feel much larger. Dozens of inlets and coves add to the illusion of solitude and remoteness. For a little quiet, simply glide into one of the tiny bays and cast a lure into the dark, murky water. Though the water clarity is low, fish thrive in its depths. Anglers can expect to catch muskellunge, largemouth and smallmouth bass, panfish, northern pike, and walleye. Classed a “Class A1” musky lake, anglers have in the past caught trophy-sized fish. Three boat launches invite watery recreational fun. Jet-ski, sail, or canoe. Climb into a kayak and explore one of the mysterious floating bogs, which can stretch out over an acre.High overhead, bald eagles soar in lazy loops, sharing the skies with hawks and ospreys. There are established aeries in the area, at which bald eagles nest and raise their brood. When winter rolls around, the fun doesn’t stop. Locals and out-of-towners alike hit the ice for a round of hockey, ice skating, and even sailboat races. Away from the activity, small sheds pop up on the ice, housing stubborn fishermen as they wait for the next bite. Cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are enjoyed by many, too.Though most of the lands around Lake Nokomis are privately owned by a mix of farms and logging companies, there’s plenty of land-oriented recreational fun for adventurers. The southern trailhead to Bearskin Lake State Trail is conveniently close by. Laid over an ancient railroad track used to haul logs, the trail extends 26.5 miles north, passing through dense woods, open meadows, and open-air wooden trestle bridges.A portion of Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest lies about 25 miles northwest. Completely untouched since logging was halted, native flora and fauna have returned in full force, blanketing the once-bare hills in lush greenery. Hikers, adventurers, and outdoor-lovers are welcome to go exploring, though maintained trails are few and far in between. People should anticipate encountering pure wilderness.
Camping at Lake Nokomis
It’s easy to be tempted into simply pulling over on the side of a road to grab a few hours of sleep or go exploring. However, in this remote part of Wisconsin, roads are narrow and often poorly maintained. A wise RV camper will play it safe and seek out an established campground. Unfortunately, RV camping at Lake Nokomis isn’t possible; there is no established campground on the shores. However, there are several options within a 15 miles radius.Tomahawk Campground and RV Park is laid out in an open space, and campers have plenty of room to stretch out. Each site has almost a full acre of space to themselves. The old-school facility offers amenities like hot showers, an indoor heated swimming pool (a plus in winters), and a hot tub. Campers can also choose from full or partial hookups. Also close by is Terrace View Campground, which has been continually operated by two families for nearly a hundred years (formerly known as Wolf’s Campsites prior to 1968). Most sites have a water view, and all have fire rings and electric and water hookups.
Exploring the Area
In this far-flung corner of Wisconsin, the way of life is slower and savored. Relationships are lovingly nourished. Communities rally together in times of hardship, supporting each other when needed. A rental motorhome will allow you to experience that. Explore the small, charming towns, many of which have historic homes and structures lining their streets. Search for quaint diners, artists’ shops, and boutique clothing stores. Merrill, WI, houses many unusual businesses and retail shops in the historic district. Wander by the stores and enjoy the elaborate window displays showcasing their wares. At the end of a long day of sightseeing and adventuring, pick up an ice cream cone at the Windmill Ice Cream Shoppe, which has dished upWisconsin-made ice cream for generations. Find your perfect RV camping adventure at Lake Nokomis and enjoy the lake with family and friends.
Anna and Joey were absolutely the easiest hosts to work with and they went the extra family for our family’s first ever camping trip. Would recommend them 100%
We had a great experience renting this camper! Alexandra was great, and the camper was clean and prepped for us with everything we needed. We removed the dining table and our pack 'n play fit perfectly. :)
Leane was super accommodating and very easy to work with. The camper itself was clean, easy to set up and use, and very comfortable for 2. We will definitely be booking again for future trips.
