Originally a Lenape hunting grounds, the area was settled and tamed by German Reformed and Lutheran colonizers in late 1770s. They initially called the village Yellow Springs due to the unique appearance of a spring pond that had a yellowish hue, which was likely due to iron in the water. After the Civil War, the town was renamed to Chester Springs. Local lore says this was to avoid any negative association with the iron-laden waters, which people knew by that time was toxic. For much of 19th century, though, the village was used as a spa restorative retreat for the wealthy socialites of Philadelphia, New York, and Washington, DC.

The historic district of Chester Springs, which is called Yellow Springs, has been restored and is run by a nonprofit organization. It’s a living representation of what life was like two and three hundred years ago.

The closest large town is Exton, about five miles south.

The Great Outdoors

Craving fresh air and outdoor adventure? Rent a travel trailer in Chester Springs and hit one of the many parks in the area. There are dozens of wilderness parks, some small, others large, within 30 miles. French Creek State Park, when combined with the surrounding nature preserves, game lands, and national forests that join the park’s boundaries, covers almost 70,000 acres of land, which is one of the largest in this region. Nearly every outdoor activity on the books can be done in this park: hike, bike, horseback ride, swim, fish, boat, hunt, and more. Park rangers run a boat rental program, lending out small crafts like rowboats and kayaks. There are over 150 miles of trails, and there are many days when hikers can count the number of people they spot on the trail on one hand.

Hopewell Big Woods (also known as Birdsboro Preserve), one of the neighboring French Creek parks, is the last untouched piece of woodlands in Pennsylvania. The old-growth trees date back to before the founding of this country, and some are estimated to be as old as 1,000 years. Bring your RV rental from Chester Springs for the day, as there is plenty of parking that can accommodate your vehicle.

A little closer to “home,” the oddly named Binky Lee Preserve is a small park named after the previous owner’s horse. A former horse farm, the park managers, have been diligently working on returning this area to its natural, pre-civilization state, and have planted over 10,000 trees. There are a few miles of hiking trails, and the eroding original farmhouse and barn from early 1800s can still be seen. The location may be a good spot for a nature or landscape photographer.

RV Parks

When you book an RV in Chester Springs, don’t forget to figure out where to park overnight. There are a handful of private campgrounds in the area, and a larger selection up near French Creek. The closest potential candidate is the Brandywine Creek Campground in Glenmoore, which is nestled up against Marsh Creek State Park. A small creek that joins with Brandywine Creek curves around the property and many RV lots have waterfront access. Fresh trout for supper!

French Creek State Park may be a good option, particularly in the off season (winter months). The campgrounds are open year-round, while many private campgrounds in the area are closed in the winter. While they have many lots that can accommodate large RVs, only a fraction have full hookups. If that’s a required amenity, reserve well in advance.

Exploring the City

Hop into your Chester Springs motorhome rental and explore the area. Even this far out in the sticks, there’s plenty of sites with historical significance in the area. Right in the heart of Chester Springs’ historic district is Yellow Springs, a restored, living representation of life in the area spanning nearly three hundred years. Several original buildings are standing, including an old hotel, a bathhouse, two residential homes, and an art studio. Yellow Springs regularly holds art workshops and classes, teaching aspiring artists how to throw pottery, make blown glass artwork, and stone sculpture. Check online for the upcoming classes. The guided tours allows visitors to step back in time and immerse themselves in the life and culture of the era. Yellow Springs also hosts a number of local artisan and craft shops.

The Mill at Anselma (also known as Lightfoot Mill) on the outskirts of the town is perhaps one of the best-preserved example of a millery in mid-1700s. Still using the original wooden gears and millstones, the mill is still functional today and is used to grind local farmers’ grains and corn into flour and cornmeal, which can be purchased.

Craft beer has been a highly regarded and respected skill for over 200 years. There are several small enterprising breweries and microbreweries in the area, not only competing with the better-known brands that are sold nationally; they’re succeeding. Embark on a self-guided tour and explore the local breweries. Start with the small pub right in Chester Springs. Their award-winning beers are brewed in small batches and regularly rotated. The house favorites have quirky names like “Breakfast for Dummies” and “General Merriment.”

Should you be seeking a slower pace of life, friendly locals, oodles of history and fantastic scenery in Pennsylvania, consider a luxury motorhome rental in Chester Springs. Tour some breweries, walk along a trail, and take in the marvelous landscape. Rent an RV in Chester Springs, PA and enjoy exploring all that Pennsylvania has to offer.
