Abingdon lies just off Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay, near the mouth of the Bush River. It’s a tiny town and its small footprint and population mean that when you get an RV rental in Abingdon, MD, you’ll more than likely need to spend some time driving to nearby cities for attractions worthy of your vacation. However, when you book an RV in Abingdon, there’s no need to worry about finding accommodations as there are quite a few places to park your RV nearby and your sleeping setup goes wherever the road takes you.

The town of Abingdon sits a short commuting distance from Maryland’s largest city, Baltimore. It’s also within day-tripping distance of Philadelphia if you need a little extra variety when you get a travel trailer rental in Abingdon. When visiting either of these cities, it’s probably best to use public transportation to avoid unnecessarily frustrating traffic jams and costly parking fees. Both Amtrak and Maryland-specific rail lines access the cities and will make for a much more relaxing journey.

Discover Abingdon

The Great Outdoors

One of the more popular outdoor hangouts in the Abingdon area is Gunpowder Falls State Park near the town of Bradshaw. The park has some excellent swimming spots near Big Gunpowder Falls and its stunning natural beauty makes it a popular spot for wedding photo shoots.

An educational nature experience can be had at the Anita C. Leight Estuary Center on the banks of the Bush River. Classes are offered periodically and this is an excellent opportunity for the kids to get in touch with animals and learn a little bit more about the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay region.

Bynum Run Park on the edge of Bel Air is a perfect place for lounging away the afternoon or having a delicious picnic lunch with the family when you get a camper rental in Abingdon. You’ll be greeted with leafy trees shading a small duck pond that always beckons you to linger for just a bit longer.

RV Parks near Abingdon

Abingdon’s location on the outskirts of Baltimore makes it a popular place to stay for travelers hoping to put a little distance between themselves and the center of the city. One of the nearest parks to set up camp with the RV rental from Abingdon is Bar Harbor RV Park. It offers quite a few amenities, including a swimming pool, playground, fishing spots on the Chesapeake Bay, and, of course, full hookups for your Abingdon motorhome rental. There’s also the Susquehanna State Park and Campground just a little way to the north of nearby Havre de Grace. Sites are fairly low-key, with just electrical hookups available, but they do have great river access and there are a couple of fun trails that branch off from the parking area.

You could also spend a couple of nights camping in the Abingdon Walmart parking lot. If you can get manager permission and don’t mind the lack of amenities, this could be an option. If you’re a member of the armed services, you can also stay at Skipper’s Point Campground near the Aberdeen Proving Grounds installation. The campground has sites with full hookups.

Exploring the Town of Abingdon

If you’re a sports fan, you'll be happy with the wealth of great games you could be going to around Abingdon. Baltimore is home to both the Ravens (NFL football) and Orioles (MLB baseball), while nearby Philadelphia has the Eagles (NFL football), Phillies (MLB baseball), 76ers (NBA basketball), and Flyers (NHL hockey). Hoping to dial the budget down a bit? Watch the Aberdeen IronBirds (minor league baseball) play at Ripken Stadium where the games can be just as exciting.

For a little retail therapy, head to the mall in Bel Air where there are dozens of name brand stores and a food court. There’s also a clustering of big box stores at the I-95 interchange where you can find supplies. However, if you want something more upscale and unique, check out the Boulevard at Box Hill.

This gothic revival home has been preserved to retain its 18th-century look and houses some fascinating artifacts from the time period. The Hays House Museum is similar and was owned by a Harford government official in the 18th century. Volunteers at the museum frequently perform demonstrations to highlight what life was like in the colonial period.
