Smithsburg, Maryland is a town in Washington County that was established in 1813; its development into a community was the result of its location along migration paths, the arrival of a railroad, and agricultural technology developments. The town and its citizens served as a hospital during the Civil War; Confederate and Union forces exchanged artillery fire in the skies above Smithsburg during a battle in 1863.

One of Smithsburg's claims to fame is the arrival of then-sitting president Lyndon Johnson, who visited several times while vacationing at nearby Camp David. There is a local myth that during one visit, Mrs. Johnson instructed their driver to stop while she gave a piece of her mind to a junkyard owner whose lot was located along the highway. Mrs. Johnson felt the auto wrecking yard ruined the natural scenery. There is no documentation of the “discussion” although the president and his wife were in the area at the time; today the auto salvage yard still exists along the highway, located behind a row of pine trees and out of sight.

RV rentals in Washington County are your perfect choice for exploring this area, your own little “home on wheels.” There are some communities that are unique and worth having a look at while you are here. Hagerstown is nicknamed “The Hub City” due to its importance as a transportation center; its transportation network consists of two interstate highways, two railways, and a regional airport. Emmitsburg is the home of the National Emergency Training Center, which includes the Emergency Management Institute, the National Fire Academy, and the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial. Westminster is the site of one of the Gettysburg Campaign's battles, known as Corbit's Charge. Middletown opened its homes and churches during the Civil War to provide medical services to injured soldiers. New Market began as a settlement on the trade route between Frederick and Baltimore. Your Smithsburg travel trailer rental is your ticket to the history and culture of Smithsburg and Washington County.

The Great Outdoors

Catoctin Mountain Park was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps following the Great Depression in order to preserve the area and provide local citizens with an objective that would help them overcome their troubles and life situation. Today activities in the park should start from the visitor center where guests can use the washrooms and stock up on any supplies they might need. There are tens of miles of hiking trails ranging in difficulty from easy to strenuous where guests can observe the plant life and the wildlife; cabins can be rented for those wishing to stay overnight, and tent camping is allowed.

Catoctin Wildlife Preserve is an interactive wildlife sanctuary where guests can touch and feed the exotic wildlife being cared for. The park also provides educational experiences by providing guides who can inform the park's guests about the animals and their environments, and answer questions. The park also has a safari ride where visitors can view camels, bison, zebras, and much more. Keep your Smithsburg RV rental nearby, and you can spend the day taking breaks when you need or want to.

Washington Monument State Park is an outdoor recreational environment centered around the first monument created in the memory of George Washington, a rugged stone tower created in 1827 by the citizens of Boonsboro. The park has a museum dedicated to the area's environment and the events that occurred there; it is a popular destination for hikers and a good place to watch for migratory birds such as hawks, eagles, and falcons.

Exploring The City

There are a number of things to do when touring the area with a campervan rental from Smithsburg. Visitors should start with a rock lookout where you can see into West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. It is quite high, and there are no barriers, so visitors with children or those afraid of heights should use caution. Guests can drive to the top or make it into a nice day hike. Shoppers will delight in the factory and premium outlets, and there is a Dutch market which sells some furniture and gifts but mostly food items such as doughnuts, pretzels, and the more common meats and vegetables. A local hands-on museum has exhibits with themes such as baseball, dinosaurs, outer space, and more; a good family destination where kids can experience as well as look.
