Discover Silver Lake RV rentals for memorable road trips
Silver Lake was formed around 10,000 years ago by a mile-high glacier. As the glacier retreated north, it gouged shallow holes in the soft earth that would eventually be filled by water and deposited massive boulders and sheets of moraine. Silver Lake is especially unique. Due to the geology of Lake Michigan’s lakebed shaping the currents of the water, the mighty lake deposited a massive amount of sand that eventually formed high dunes bordering one side of the lake.
Visitors have been known to remark how strange it is to stand on one side of the calm Silver Lake and look across at high sand dunes without being able to see Lake Michigan. The closest town is Mears, MI, just over four miles to the east. Though it has a few boutique shops and restaurants, the closest large town with more variety in retail shopping and a hospital is Whitehall, MI, about 30 miles south. Kickstart the perfect RV camping adventure when you book an RV in Oceana County, MI.

Getting Outdoors
Shaped like half of a silver coin, much of Silver Lake’s coastline, save for the side adjacent to the sand dune, are developed. The banks are lined with grass and tall hardwoods. Though it’s a small lake, encompassing about 690 acres, it’s also a popular one thanks in part to its proximity to Silver Lake State Park’s off-highway vehicle (OHV) area. In the summertime, adventurers flock to the water to cool off as well as to enjoy various aquatic activities like jet skiing and water-skiing. However, when the temperature drops, so do the number of visitors on the lake. Fishing in the murky, tea-stained water is excellent, particularly walleye. Anglers can expect to catch rock bass, smallmouth bass, black crappie, and pumpkinseed.Five boat launches, two of which are paved, are available for the public to use as are three sandy beaches. The OHV area is one of the only off-road beaches east of the Mississippi River, which is a part of why the area can get crowded in the summer months.Hundreds of miles of trails are available for hikers and other land-lubbers to explore. The Hart-Montague Trail State Park, laid over a former railroad corridor, stretches over 22 miles. Hikers, bikers, and horseback riders enjoy the long linear trail, which slices through mature woods, traveling by airy, sweet-smelling meadows and farmlands, and wetlands where wildlife can be observed.Vast, seemingly endless Huron-Manistee National Forest sprawls across nearly a million acres of woodlands and wetlands. Over 350 miles spider out through the woods, some ascending while others descend into valleys and hollows. There, it’s easy to get an idea of what wilderness looked like before man descended upon Michigan.
Camping at Silver Lake
Skip the long drive from a hotel. Rent an RV and immediately launch into action, whether it’s to throttle an ATV up a mighty sand dune or launch a boat onto the picturesque Silver Lake to catch fish. Thanks to the OHV area, there are many RV campgrounds on Silver Lake for visitors to choose from. The RV campground at Silver Lake State Park has over 200 sites with electric hookups, restrooms, and easy access to the park itself. This campground is open year-round.Silver Lake RV Resort and Campground boasts amenities like full or partial hookups, a heated swimming pool, and free WiFi. The resort regularly holds family-friendly activities, too.Jellystone Park, made famous by the lovable cartoon character, Yogi Bear, may be a candidate to consider. It features several amenities like a heated swimming pool, a rec room, and hayrides. All sites have full hookups, and a laundromat is available for the guests.
Exploring the Area
As exciting as Silver Lake can be to visit and explore, don’t overlook the small towns dotting the coastline of Lake Michigan. Many towns have boutique shops, quaint bistros, and craft breweries with fantastic beer just waiting to be discovered. Ludington, among its many charms, is well known for supporting the craft-beer scene, and many award-winning breweries can be found lining the downtown street. As the miles go by in the comforts of a rental motorhome, keep an eye out for one of the hundreds of orchards found along the Michigan Lake coast. Many orchards’ apples in this region are prized for their crisp, sweet flavor that packs a punch. Many roadside farm stands sell homemade jams, apple sauces, and pies alongside their fresh produce.Pentwater, MI, is home to one of the oldest candy shops in central Michigan, Cosmic Candy Company in Pentwater, MI. A poorly kept secret, locals and out-of-town visitors have been flocking to this unassuming shop for decades. All candies are locally sourced or made by the owners of Cosmic.Steeped in history and vibrant outdoor culture, Silver Lake is a terrific place for a once-in-a-lifetime RV camping adventure.
The camper was great, and Justin was super. We needed a last-minute rental, because our prior rental canceled on us at the last minute. Justin responded right away and our vacation was so much fun!
