Doylestown gets its name from a certain astute man, William Doyle, who built a tavern in 1745 at a crossroad of two major roads, one of which led directly into Philadelphia. The tavern was known for years as William Doyle’s Tavern. Due to the high traffic, settlers followed suit and established homes and businesses around the tavern. Although the original tavern is no longer standing, a neighboring one called the Fountain House was built a few years later in 1758 by William Doyle, and it still stands today. It can be seen at the corner of Main and State streets.

Notable citizens include Pink, an award-winning rock performer, Pearl S. Buck, a Pulitzer-prize winning author, anthropologist Margaret Mead and many more.

The closest large town is Philadelphia, about 40 miles south. History buffs will love the museums, and historic sites located throughout the city. Park your RV rental here and make it a day outing for all to enjoy.

Discover Doylestown

The Great Outdoors

One of the main advantages to Doylestown is its close proximity to several parks. The largest within a few minutes’ drive is the Peace Valley Park, which shelters Lake Galena (also known as Peace Valley Reservoir). There are over 15 miles of trails. Herds of deer are rampant, and a sharp-eyed hiker can sight muskrat and otter dens. Small, non-motorized watercrafts are permitted, and the park rents out canoes to visitors, too. Fishermen can catch largemouth bass, channel catfish, and sunfish.

Nockamixon State Park, a larger park to the north of Doylestown, offers more recreational fun. Combined with the adjacent game land, the park has over 30 miles of trails that serpentine through mature woods and airy meadows. Bring your horses! The trails are multi-use, and there are plenty of parking for trailers and long rigs. The warm-water lake runs rampant with smallmouth and largemouth bass and striped hybrid bass. Fishermen rarely have a bad day at the Nockamixon Lake. If you want to try your hand at angling, the park lends out rods.

During the hunting seasons, gun-hunting, archery, and trapping of small game and deer are permitted. You can also train your dogs to hunt in this park, though it’s highly recommended that your dogs wear blaze orange at all times. For the novices, there are workshops and training sessions available.

RV Parks

When you rent a camper rental in Doylestown, you’ll need someplace to park it overnight while you hit the sack. There are a handful of RV parks and campgrounds north of the city. The Little Red Barn, for example, is a family-oriented campground close to Nockamixon. It offers amenities like full hookups for your RV, a fire ring at each site, a pool, laundry and restroom facilities, and free WiFi. One potential snag is this campground is open only during the summer months.

Tohickon Family Campgrounds in Quakertown, which is also near Nockamixon, may be a good candidate, too. In addition to the usual full hookups, they have a general store, which is handy for replenishing small necessities. Their showers are free, and they also have waterfront access.

On occasion, you’ll need to make an unplanned stop overnight. It may relieve you to know that there are a few Walmarts within five miles of Doylestown, and the closest is in Hatfield, just minutes away. Be sure to ask the store manager for permission beforehand.

Exploring the City

Don’t be fooled by Doylestown’s size. There’s plenty of things to see and do in this town. History buffs, take note. Several homes, churches, and other structures in Doylestown and the neighboring towns are historic, dating back to late 1600s.

One of the things Doylestown is well known for is the Mercer Museum and Fonthill Castle. The owner, who was an eccentric millionaire, built a castle and two buildings out of solid concrete, which was thought to be an impossible feat at the time. Obsessed with tiles, he devoted several halls to displaying exquisite tile work. A vast collection of art paintings and prints also decorate several rooms. Both facilities offer tours throughout the year. A memorable one is the Tower Tour, which takes the guests on a behind-the-scenes tour of Henry Mercer’s home. Climb narrow, steep stairs and navigate the hidden passageways to find secret nooks and peepholes!

The County Theater, found in downtown Doylestown, is an eccentric theater with an art-deco vibe. Restored to its 1940s glory, the theater features independent, art, and foreign films. They also regularly host Saturday morning matinees, featuring old-school cartoons and classic children movies. This campground makes a perfect destination for your motorhome rental from Doylestown.

Hit the links! There are a number of public golf courses, including Bucks Club in Jamison. The 18-hole course is a classic 1920s course design, and golf carts are available for rental. The facility also has three pools and a diving area.

Pennsylvania's mild, occasionally humid climate is ideal for vineyards. The Buckingham Valley Winery, established in mid-1960s, is one of the oldest in the area. It produces wines ranging from oaky, aged reds to light, crisp whites. There is a tasting room at the vineyard, and guided tours are offered by reservation (call ahead).

Should it be the taste of freedom in Pennsylvania that you are seeking, consider a camper rental in Doylestown. Try to catch a glimpse of the wildlife, set by a campfire, watch a sunset, and enjoy the vast beauty. Rent an RV in Doylestown, PA and set off on the perfect family adventure.
