The name of the town, Upper Black Eddy, comes from one of the first families who settled in the area. The Black family built the first tavern and hotel in the area to cater to the travelers coming down the Delaware River. In the early 1800s, the Pennsylvania Canal was built, connecting Pittsburgh to Philadelphia. That resulted in a new surge of travelers moving up north from Philadelphia to Easton, a town a few miles north of Upper Black Eddy.

In those days, upriver travel was exceedingly slow, and it could take days to travel a few miles on the water because the boats were often towed by horses or oxen on the shoreline. Going by land often was not possible because roads were few, and often, the routes were very circuitous and dangerous. As a result of the new northbound traffic, settlements saw a boom in business growth, and homes and businesses sprang up. Over the years, Upper Black Eddy, PA became a favorite vacation spot for Philadelphia inhabitants seeking an escape from the humid heat. President Grover Cleveland is said to have favored this town for his vacations, as well.

Unfortunately, the original tavern and hotel, called the Black Eddy Inn, was demolished in 2010. There are still several homes and structures that date back to this time, however.

The closest large town is Easton about 16 miles north.

The Great Outdoors

You likely want to take advantage of an RV rental in Upper Black Eddy and explore the outdoors. There are several parks in the area, offering a huge array of activities. The nearby Delaware Canal State Park, which stretches along the Delaware River, has over 60 miles of walking and biking paths, most of it with scenic waterfront views. There are simple boat launches at many points along the trail, providing easy access to the Delaware River for kayaking and canoeing. Motorized boats are permitted, as well. The river contains mostly warm-water fish, like the American Shad, smallmouth bass, striped bass, and walleye. Fish from the banks or from your small craft boats.

Bow-hunting deer is permitted at appropriate times of year, and only in certain areas. The Giving Pond, which is close to Upper Black Eddy, is one designated area. The fun doesn’t stop in winter. This trail is popular with cross-country skiers, and the small ponds often freeze up, providing an excellent surface for ice skaters.

Ringing Rocks Park is a local curiosity. A tiny park at only four acres, the field is covered with boulders that somehow ring like bells when struck with a hammer. It’s unknown what exactly causes it. This park also includes the highest waterfall in Bucks County, which is about 15 feet high. It’s no Niagara Falls, but would be a good spot for a landscape photographer.

Just across the Pennsylvania-New Jersey border, the Milford Bluffs in Milford, NJ, overlooks the Delaware River. It’s one of the highest viewpoints on the river. The park, which is a mix of forest and grasslands, is 264 acres and has a few miles of maintained trails. There are a couple hidden waterfalls that can be hard to spot from the trails. Keep your ears open!

If watching boats drift on the River is too dull for you, hop into your Upper Black Eddy camper rental and find some fun. The Phillips Farm in Milford, NJ, has a u-pick area for visitors. Park your travel trailer rental from Upper Black Eddy and enjoy the day here!

The Van Sant Airport in Erwinna, which bills itself as the “greatest airfield on this planet," is one of the oldest airfields in the state. And who knows, the pilot might give you a turn at the joystick.

At the end of a long day of sightseeing and adventure, take the edge off with a cup of hot black coffee as you absorb the Delaware River scenery from the riverside patio. The roaster is in a 19th-century barn. All coffee is roasted on-site, and if you want, they’ll also grind it for you.

Should it be a slower pace of life in a Pennsylvania town with friendly folks you are seeking, consider a motorhome rental in Upper Black Eddy. Enjoy a great cup of coffee, watch a sunset and take in the charming, picturesque landscape. Rent a luxury motorhome rental in Upper Black Eddy, PA, and see what all there is to explore!
