Despite being sandwiched between the well-connected Interstates of 94 and 39, Petenwell Lake is frequented by few travelers. Nestled into the heart of central Wisconsin, the lake is just an hour away from both Eau Claire and Madison, making it the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the big cities.

Built-in 1948 by the Wisconsin River Power Company, Petenwell Lake remains to be one of the largest manmade inland lakes in Wisconsin. Although it continues to be utilized by the hydroelectric facility, it has also become a popular recreational lake amongst the local population. Not as widely known within the traveling community, you’ll want to book an RV in Adams County when you’re interested in seeing some of the lesser-visited parts of The Badger State.

Getting Outdoors

Encompassing a vast 23,000 acres, there is plenty of room for recreational activities when you rent a camper near Petenwell Lake. Although a small proportion of the lake’s shoreline is taken up by private property, the majority of it is home to miles of undeveloped forest that blankets the lake with a rugged charm. With fifteen boat launch ramps spread across the lake’s extensive shoreline, it is easy enough to get out and about on the waters. Those motorhome camping with their own boat can enjoy a day of kayaking, canoeing or even water skiing! Don’t forget to sail down to the very southern end of the lake to cast an eye over Petenwell Rock, which is one of the best places to see a pair of nesting bald eagles.

No Petenwell Lake camping trip is complete without a day spent fishing on the lake’s fruitful waters. Both novice and experienced fishers can expect to catch a variety of fish including walleye, northern pike and largemouth bass. Whether you choose to find a secluded spot along the shoreline or head into the deeper waters of Petenwell Lake in your own boat, you are guaranteed a tasty catch to take home for dinner!

Camping at Petenwell Lake isn’t just about the water-based activities; there is also plenty to keep you busy on dry land. Those who are looking for a place to swim or sunbathe should head the Petenwell County Park located on the southeastern banks of the lake. Visitors can find a designated swimming zone (note that there is no lifeguard on duty here), public changing rooms and toilets, and a plethora of hiking trails that allow you to explore the untouched forests surrounding the lake.

Camping at Petenwell Lake

The hardest thing about RV camping at Petenwell Lake is choosing which of the many campgrounds to stay at. For easy access to the lake’s waters, consider staying at either Moonlite Trails Campground or in Petenwell Park. Out of these two campgrounds, Moonlite Tails is the best equipped and offers visitors the choice of 40 sites, the majority of which are serviced with full hookups. Campers here will also have access to several WiFi hotspots and a convenient onsite dump station.

For those that don’t mind going back to basics, Petenwell Park offers travelers with a more primitive approach to camping. Although some of the sites are equipped with 20 amp electric hookups, the majority of campers will need to take advantage of the shower and toilet facilities that are provided free of charge. For a more extensive choice of campsites, head south to Castle Rock Lake where you will find a selection of scenic campgrounds suitable for your RV rental.
