Book an RV in Juneau County, and you can begin by pointing your motorhome rental towards the Yellow River State Wildlife Area, which resides in an area where northern conifer-hardwood forests start giving way to tree stands of southern hardwood. Nature enthusiasts will enjoy the wide variety of tree species on hand, such as maple, cottonwood, elm, and black ash, to name a few. The landscape supporting these forests includes low sandy ridges, floodplain forest, and, of course, the Yellow River. You can come here to go hiking, but there are no designated trails; hunting is also allowed as well as fishing, birding, and wildlife viewing, and gathering edibles such as mushrooms. In the winter, this is a good destination to enjoy cross-country skiing. Park your RV rental nearby, and you can use it as a wildlife blind while enjoying its comforts. Suk Cerney Peatlands State Natural Area is a year-round outdoor recreation area where you can enjoy fishing and wildlife viewing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing in the winter, and hiking. The refuge doesn't have any established trails although hikers may find some paths that have been worn down by foot traffic; you should, therefore, plan ahead by having access to a map and compass, and letting others know where you've gone and when you plan on returning. Some activities may not be allowed, such as camping, campfires, or collecting fossils and minerals or plants. Cranberry Creek Mound Group State Natural Area has been a nature preserve since 1986 and is an ideal destination if you're interested in archeology. The site is home to numerous mounds that were created by Native Americans hundreds of years ago; the earliest examples were created almost 2,000 years ago. One of the mounds has a bird effigy that is approximately 50 feet long, with a wingspan of more than 100 feet. Some of the ecosystems represented here are old-growth northern dry forests, floodplain forests, and a ditched channel of Cranberry Creek, which flows through the park. There are stands of silver and red maple trees, jack pine, pine-oak, and birch. Hiking and most activities are allowed, but activities requiring vehicles such as bicycles, ATVs, and snowmobiles aren't allowed except on trails and roads that are specifically designated for them.
