Wildcat Mountain Campground

Ontario campers looking to stay close to home will want to explore the Wildcat Mountain State Park. This park is connected to the Wildcat Mountain Campground and consists of verdant forests and rocky bluffs overlooking the Kickapoo River. These cliffs are marvelous for hikers, with over 20 miles of trails that afford hikers delightful views of the Kickapoo River and surrounding parkland. As one of Wisconsin's significant rivers, the Kickapoo River is excellent for watersports, including kayakers, canoeing, and fishing. Fishing is one of the park's best pastimes. There are over 40 different species of fish inhabiting the river, and it is especially great for catching brown trout. During the winter, there are seven miles of trails open to cross-country skiing. There are some magnificent lakes located close to Ontario, and one of the best can be found at Buckhorn State Park. This park contains part of Castle Rock Lake, which flows into the Wisconsin and Yellow rivers. This park has a diverse landscape and is perfect for hikers, with four miles of trails that run through woodlands, prairies, wetlands, and past a small fishing pond. By the water, swimmers can laze around on the 300-foot swimming beach, and several boat ramps accommodate all types of watercraft. Castle Rock Lake is also an exceptional fishing destination, and there's a 90-foot fishing pier for easier access to deeper water. Another waterway you may want to visit during your campervan rental vacation is the Mississippi River. Great Bluffs State Park is situated just across the Minnesota state line and is one of the best ways to see this magnificent river, thanks to stark clifftops that border the river. There are over ten miles of trails that lead up these cliffs and through the surrounding forests. During your hike, keep on the lookout for local wildlife, with several predatory bird species inhabiting the area, including great horned owls, red-tailed hawks, and the occasional bald eagle.
