One of the first communities to form in south-central Pennsylvania, Hanover was officially founded in 1730s. The Civil War put this community in the spotlight. Several skirmishes and battles were fought in this region as the South moved north in its incursion of Pennsylvania. Today, Hanover, PA is a quiet farming town and the site of Snyder’s of Hanover, a snack maker and distributor (known in particular for its popular pretzels).
The closest large town is Gettysburg, which is 15 miles to the west. York is about 20 miles to the northeast with Harrisburg a little over 40 miles away. Baltimore, MD, is just over 50 miles to southeast and Lancaster, PA, is around 50 miles east.
Rent an RV in Hanover to gain access to a world of outdoor recreational activities. There’s plenty of hiking, camping, and fishing opportunities to be had. Hop into your motorhome rental from Hanover and visit the nearby Codorus State Park. Locals flock to the park year-round. In addition to sailing, kayaking, scuba diving, the small lake also has a number of fish for fishermen to try their luck at catching. Species include largemouth bass, yellow perch, crappie, muskellunge, catfish, northern pike, bluegill, and a few other uncommon species. Rainbow and brown trout can also be found in colder waters, near the Codorus Creek.
This park also offers a 54-hole disc golf course, one of the first in south-central Pennsylvania, and a small swimming pool. In winters, brave the brisk cold and go snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, ice skating, and fishing, or ice sailing. Small-game hunting is permitted, though with limitations.
Want to spot wildlife? There are several herds of fleet deer and other small wildlife in the Michaux State Forest, and the elusive black bear can occasionally be spotted in this park, too. Small lakes and ponds are scattered throughout its boundaries, ideal for introspective, quiet fishing sessions. Engage in other recreational activities like primitive camping, hiking, horseback riding, bicycling, and snowmobiling. Over 130 miles of trails wind through old-growth woods. RV camping is allowed with free-but-required permit from the park ranger.
Although this part of the state is rural, there are not many options for RV camping in the immediate area. When you book an RV rental in Hanover, you'll definitely need a good spot to park it for the night. If you’re open to a more rustic setting, Codorus State Park offers plenty of sites for RVs, and a few have hookups. Reserve in advance, particularly in the summers. Those spots go quickly!
In contrast, Gettysburg also provides several options for RV camping. In addition to a KOA found on the west side of the town, there are RV campgrounds ranging from rustic to luxury. One such example is Drummer Boy Camp Resort, which offers amenities like golf cart rentals, swimming pools and a hot spa, and a water slide.
When you rent a camper from Hanover, you’ll occasionally find a need to make an unplanned stop overnight. There is a Walmart, which is known for being RV-friendly, on the outskirts of town. There are a handful of other Walmarts scattered around within 20-mile radius. Be sure to ask the store manager for permission beforehand, though.
When you first visit Hanover and the surrounding areas in your luxury motorhome rental, you’ll quickly realize that there’s no escaping history. Several homes and buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. The Neas House, built in 1783, is a classic brick-lined Georgian home, one of the few from that era still standing in Hanover.
Gettysburg, a short drive away, is the site of the famous President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and the bloody Gettysburg Battle, where over 50,000 men lost their lives. There are both self-guided tours and guided tours offered at these locations. For the latter, where possible, join a group led by “Licensed Battlefield Guides,” who are trained, tested, and licensed by Gettysburg National Military Park to ensure you have a phenomenal adventure.
The Gettysburg Museum of the Civil War showcases one of the largest collections of Civil War relics in the country, interactive exhibits, and multimedia presentations are on display. The Dave Willis House, restored to its condition at the time of Civil war, was where President Lincoln finalized his Gettysburg Address speech. If you seek information about one of your ancestors who may have participated in Civil War, the McKenna Foundation Resource Room is open to visitors daily and provides access to a number of ancestry software for free.
After a long day of adventure, touring, and sightseeing, cap off your visit by relaxing with a glass of local wine or beer. The Marburg Winery, minutes away from Hanover, produces both white and reds, and fruit blends as well. Alternatively, the Aldus Brewing Company offers craft ales, IPA's, and stouts, and tours are available upon request.
