As you'd expect, given its waterfront location, boating is easily the most popular activity on offer in Buckhorn State Park. The Castle Rock Flowage offers an aquatic playground for watercraft great and small — from kayaks and canoes to ski boats and houseboats, you can find them all here. There are five boat ramps to choose from in the park and the nearby Buckhorn Wildlife Area, so there's no excuse not to get out on the water. And if you like getting around under your own steam, there's an excellent self-guided canoe trail that helps you learn more about the area's wetlands. Of course, if you're an avid angler, you'll no doubt be well aware of the abundant fishing opportunities on offer in Buckhorn State Park. A huge variety of fish species calls the area home, so there's a chance of catching a big one at any time of year. Some Buckhorn State Park campers bring boats along so they can get out on the water, but others prefer to cast a line from an accessible fishing pier located near the north picnic area. There's also a kids' fishing pond on the Turtle Trail north of the park entrance — perfect for giving younger campers a taste of a true fishing experience. If you're visiting in summer, you'll probably also be tempted to go for a cooling swim. There's a 300-foot sandy beach for anyone eager to get wet, but there are no lifeguards on duty, so you'll be entering the water at your own risk. Finally, Buckhorn State Park also offers four miles of hiking trails for anyone looking to spend some time exploring the surrounding terrain. At just under a half-mile long, the Turtle Trail is perfect if you've got kids in tow. Meanwhile, the Oak Barrens Nature Trail features interpretive signs and an observation post to help you learn more about the ecology of the area — and maybe even spot some wildlife along the way.
