Menomonie is the county seat of Dunn County, Wisconsin; it is situated at the southern tip of Lake Menomin, a reservoir built on the Red Cedar River. The area was first settled in 1788 by a French-Canadian fur trapper and teacher, Jean Baptiste Perrault, who built a trading post-fort on the banks of the Red Cedar River very near where Menomonie is now located. This was followed by a timber mill where Menomonie now stands; it was the first permanent structure on the future city's land. The city was incorporated in 1882; in 1908, several pre-existing training programs were combined and managed by the newly formed Stout Institute, located in Menomonie and now known as the University of Wisconsin–Stout.
