Originally called Burns, Springfield is a mostly agricultural settlement in southern Minnesota, home to some of the state’s most fertile farmlands. The town was first founded in 1877 when the railroad passed through the area, and a stop was created. Named for Springfield in Massachusetts, this small town is primarily known for its farming and brick making industries.

You can find Springfield between Minneapolis, the largest and most prominent city in Minnesota, and Sioux Falls in neighboring South Dakota. When you book an RV in Springfield, you won’t just be limited to the confines of this small yet charming community. The dazzling nature parks and forests of Minnesota can be seen around nearly every corner, depending on how far you are ready to drive with your Springfield motorhome rental.

Discover Springfield

The Great Outdoors

There is no shortage of stunning outdoor havens in the "Land of Ten Thousand Lakes,” and figuring out which ones to visit during your stay can be quite fun in its own right. Flandrau State Park is one of the easiest parks to find in the area, no more than a half hour's drive east. When you set out to visit this nature spot, you’ll find a pleasant reservoir that is ideal for swimming, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. Aside from the volleyball courts, miles of hiking trails, beaches, and camping spots that you can use when you rent an RV, the park is full of amazing historical landmarks from different time periods. Ancient settlements from several thousand years ago are scattered throughout the park, as are some army barracks and old POW camps built during WWII to house German prisoners.

Minneopa State Park is farther east, a well-known historical landmark and one of the oldest parks in the entire state. Here you can see cascading waterfalls and brilliant geological features carved out by receding glaciers ages ago. The park has plenty of campsites for you and your Springfield campervan rental, along with hiking trails, paved bike paths, fishing areas, and picnic shelters.

Mille Lacs Kathio State Park is north of Minneapolis and quite far in comparison to the other parks previously listed. That being said, you probably don't want to miss out on this glorious collection of impressive wildlife, charming landscapes, and an abundance of outdoor activities. The park’s main attractions, however, are the scattered archaeological sites dating back thousands of years. These burial sites and old villages were inhabited by ancient ancestors of the natives, and many of their primitive tools and remains are still being discovered.

If you go even farther north, Itasca State Park is one of the premier destinations in the entire state. The lakefront park is the oldest in the state and the second oldest state park in the USA. Here visitors can hike through maple-basswood-aspen forests in what is now a National Natural Landmark. Bike, hike, swim, boat, or ride a horse; there is so much to do when you bring your Springfield RV rental by owner to Itasca State Park.

RV Parks

What it lacks in attractions, Springfield more than makes up for with lots of accessible and easy to find camping spaces to accommodate you and your Springfield RV rental. Finstad’s Oak Haven Campground is family-run, and open year-round. This peaceful park has all the regular amenities so you will feel right at home.

Shady Oaks Campground features hiking trails, fishing spots, kayak rentals, horseshoes, biking paths, and playscapes for kids. The park frequently hosts festivities and private events like car shows, fairs, and other celebrations.

Kiesler’s Campground and RV Resort has more than enough to keep you occupied during your stay, including basketball, volleyball, horseshoes, boating, fishing, and hiking. There is even a refreshing pool for guests to use with a spiral water slide for hours of entertainment.

City Attractions

Springfield is special in its own unique way, but there is not a whole lot going on in this rural community. Nearby Mankato can remedy the situation, with lots of fun and interesting ways to pass the time. The Sibley Park Zoo is nice for people of all ages, with gazebos, flower gardens, and a menagerie of exotic animals.

The Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota is great if you have young children along for the ride. There is lots to glean from a trip to this informative learning space, from science to art and lots of history too.

Carnegie Art Center is a fabulous place to view different types of artwork, in a historical landmark once serving as a library. This trendy space is revitalized, with contemporary and classical art adorning its walls, and there is even a lovely little gift shop where you can buy souvenirs for loved ones back home.
