With its prime position on the shores of Lake Michigan, Point Beach State Forest is a haven for water sports enthusiasts. There are plenty of different water-based activities on offer, but the pick of them during the summer months would have to be swimming. There are six miles of sandy beach where you can dip your toes (or more) in the water, and the lake provides welcome relief from the heat in summer. However, there are no lifeguards on duty, so enter the water at your own risk and keep a very close eye on the kids. Once you've cooled off, you might like to take to the water for a paddle. While there's no boat launch provided in the forest, it's easy to launch a canoe or kayak onto the water straight from the shore. Paddling offers a relaxing and peaceful way to explore the Lake Michigan shoreline, but make sure you're wary of changing wind conditions that can quickly blow you away from the shore. And if you'd like to try your luck at some fishing along the way, basic fishing gear can be borrowed for free from the park office. Water sports aside, the other main activity in Point Beach State Forest is hiking. A 17-mile trail network winds its way through the park's 3,000 acres, so there are plenty of options for those looking to do some exploring. If you're looking for something quick and easy, the half-mile Swales Nature Trail offers a chance to glimpse beautiful wildflowers and a variety of bird species. If you'd rather tackle something more challenging, the Ridges Trail should suit. It offers three different loops to suit different fitness levels — you can tackle just the three-mile Red Loop, add the Blue Loop for a five-and-a-half-mile trek, or do the Red, Blue, and Yellow Loops for a journey of just over seven miles. Finally, if you remembered to pack your mountain bike, you can set out along the five-mile bicycle trail to Rawley Point. And if you want to venture further afield, this route also links up with the seven-mile Mariners Trail, which continues further around the Lake Michigan shore to Two Rivers.
